The new 2018 Mustang GT is the most advanced, powerful, and now fastest ever with its ability to accelerated from 0-60 MPH in under 4 seconds with the addition of a new “Drag Strip Mode”. This makes Ford’s iconic muscle car faster than a $94,000 Porsche 911. How does the new Mustang accomplish this feat?
- Improved horsepower and torque from a newly redesigned 5.0-liter V8, producing 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
- Drag Strip Mode which optimizes the engine’s torque and transmission for straight-line acceleration.
- The new 10-speed SelectShift transmission provides quicker, smoother shifts, transferring power to the wheels more efficiently.
- Increased traction with the addition of custom-designed Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires available in the Performance Pack
Not only will the Mustang GT see improved acceleration and quarter-mile times, even EcoBoost Mustangs can get in the game. The same Drag Strip Mode is also available for the 310 horsepower EcoBoost Mustangs. In conjunction with the more powerful engine over last year’s model and with Drag Strip Mode enabled, EcoBoost Mustangs are capable of reach 60 MPH in under 5 seconds.
Much of the work the new Drag Strip Mode does is within the transmission. The new 10-speed automatic transmissions replaces the previous model’s 6-speed, and offers wide-ratio span and optimized gear spacing. This results in improved responsiveness and and performance. Additionally, an all-new electronic control system includes adaptive shift-scheduling algorithms to help ensure that the right gear is engaged at the right time, including capabilities to skip-shift and direct downshift.
